Two days tour
Today we are heading towards Svaneti, mountainous region of Georgia. Our way lies through the capital of Samegrelo – Zugdidi. We see the city and visit the famous Dadiani Palace. After lunch in traditional megrelian village (where you will learn to cook Megrelian dishes) we continue our way to Mestia. Surrounded by 3,000 –5,000 meter peaks, it is the highest inhabited area in the Caucasus, best known for its architectural treasures and picturesque landscapes. The region is called The Kingdom of Thousand Towers, because of famous Svanetian towers, erected mainly in the 9th-12th centuries. Drive to Mestia, the centre of Upper Svaneti. En route visit Enguri power station. Dinner and overnight in a private guesthouse in Mestia with sharing facilities.
After breakfast we take jeeps and go to the village of Ushguli (2200m) the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village is most famous for its abundance of watchtowers and this is where you get the view of the highest mountain in Georgia – Mt. Shkara (5068m). We visit Ushguli towers and Lamaria church (12th century) and start walking towards Mt. Shkara. A beautiful walk brings you to Shkara Glacier. Return to Batumi.
