Day 2. Mtskheta – Gori – Uplistsikhe
Our tour will begin with Uplistsikhe. If you believe the legends, the city in the rock decided to cut down the great grandson of Noah himself. We can not say for sure whether this version corresponds to reality, but archaeologists are vouching – Uplistsikhe for about three thousand years.
Houses and temples in the city were carved in a soft rock towering above the left bank of the Kura. The city remained “alive” until the Middle Ages. For a while he was chosen by his residence the famous Queen Tamara. To date, from the ancient city preserved 150 caves and some religious buildings of different eras. Today Gori is a small provincial town, but once it had a capital status. The city is about a thousand years old. About the former greatness we are reminded of the ruins of a powerful fortress, Gorisiche, located on a high hill. From the height of its walls, a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains and the winding ribbon of the Kura opens. Further we will go to Gori. In the twentieth century, the town became famous without exaggeration for the whole world, as the homeland of the most controversial leader, Joseph Stalin. Until recently, one of the last monuments of the People’s Leader on the territory of the former USSR stood here. The monument is no longer there, but Stalin’s house-museum welcomes guests with pleasure. We will make the last stop in Mtskheta, the main city of the Kartvelian kingdom, the heart of Georgia. Kartli gave the name to the whole country (in Georgian, Georgia is called Sakartvelo), becoming the center of the unification of Georgian lands. You can not fully understand Georgia, if you do not visit Mtskheta.
Having lost the status of the state capital, the city retained the status of a spiritual capital. Here is the main Georgian Cathedral of Svetitskhoveli, several ancient monastic complexes. In one of them, according to legend, lived an educator of Georgia Saint Nina of Cappadocia. And the other was described in M. Lermontov’s famous poem “Mtsyri”. The town is woven from antiquities of the early Middle Ages, here every building is a cultural monument, not without reason Mtskheta is under the protection of UNESCO. Overnight in Tbilisi.
